Hi all,
I know many of you have been anxiously awaiting an update regarding our appointment yesterday. Jack and I had our blood drawn at Cardinal Glennon and met with our genetic counselor to sign our consent forms and to go over the genetic test that will be performed. The test itself will look at the genetic makeup of Jackie and if they find any abnormalities they will then look at our blood samples. The test results will take 3 months to come back and once they have arrived we will meet with the genetic team to review them. It is exciting to think that they may be able to find additional answers as to why Jackie had so many health conditions. In regards to our main question- what is the likelihood of this happening to another kiddo? The answer, from our understanding, is at the highest 25%. This is were genetics itself becomes a very interesting and somewhat confusing subject. If you are interested in why the answer is 25% you will want to look up the punnett square. I am still trying to wrap my mind around the whole subject as it is a little more extensive than what you learn about in High School science class. I will be sure to share with you all our findings three months from now.
On another topic, as many of you know we consented to have an autopsy done of Jackie after his passing. We are awaiting results that should come in any day now. We will be contacted directly by his doctor at Cardinal Glennon and we are looking forward to hearing from her. I am going into this conversation with the expectation that the autopsy will only confirm what we already knew about him, however it would be nice if additional answers were found. I just don’t want to get our hopes up, so it is just safer to think that we will only hear what we already know.
We love you Jackie!
